UTSA celebrates reading to children on Dr. Seuss's birthday

(Feb. 21, 2003)--The Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors College, home to the America Reads program, hosts the annual celebration of Dr. Seuss's Birthday from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 1 in the Buena Vista Street Building Meeting/Assembly Room (1.338), UTSA Downtown Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

KSAT TV anchor Ursula Pari and KABB TV reporters Marissa Oakes and Joe Vithayathil will be on hand to read their favorite Dr. Seuss books to kids and kids-at-heart.

America Reads is a federally funded program that employs college students through the work-study program to become reading tutors at local elementary schools. UTSA employs approximately 30 America Reads tutors, who are currently placed at four schools in the SAISD.

Dr. Seuss's Birthday is in conjunction with the national Read Across America event. As part of Read Across America, UTSA President Ricardo Romo, Gen. Robert Herres from USAA and other guests will read to children from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, March 3 at Ridgeview Elementary School, 8223 N. McCullough.

The event is sponsored by UTSA K-16 Initiatives and Honors College and San Antonio: Making Mentoring a Partnership.

UTSA students, faculty and staff are still needed to volunteer March 3 to read for one hour to students at elementary schools throughout San Antonio.

For more information about America Reads, Read Across America and volunteering, contact Christella Ramos or Ricardo Gonzalez, Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors College, at (210) 458-2769.
