Estela Ann Guerrero

UTSA alumna to work for Peace Corps in Africa

(Jan. 6, 2003)--The Peace Corps Office of Southwest Regional Recruitment announced that UTSA graduate and San Antonio resident Estela Ann Guerrero has accepted an assignment to Zambia. She will depart Jan. 27.

Guerrero, who graduated from UTSA in 2002 with a bachelor's degree in Spanish and communications, looks forward to her cross-cultural experience. "I want to live life to its fullest and experience the Peace Corps," said the 24-year-old. "I want to grow, as well as help my fellow man."

Guerrero will help establish and develop neighborhood health committees in Zambia, assisting in the decentralization of health care as well as educating the community about its major health concerns.

She is one of more than 165,000 Americans who have served in over 136 countries since President John F. Kennedy signed the executive order creating the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. Today the Peace Corps includes 7,000 volunteers in 70 nations, developing self-sustaining projects in the areas of education, business, health, environment and agriculture.
