Students utilize newly opened recreation facilities

(Jan. 13, 2003)--Above, a student tries out the exercising equipment at the newly opened UTSA Recreation and Wellness Center. Dedication ceremonies for the recreation facility and the Child Development Center were conducted this morning. Even as ceremonies ensued, students used the new gymnasium, cardiovascular room, racquetball courts and aerobic studios.

At the Recreation and Wellness Center ceremony, UTSA President Ricardo Romo welcomed a large crowd of UTSA students, faculty, staff and supporters, and introduced UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof, who described the facilities as an additional step toward top-tier university status. Student Government Association President Melissa Killen expressed her appreciation to fellow students for funding the centers.

The $20 million project, located across from the Convocation Center on the south side of the 1604 Campus, is unique to the campus because it is primarily student-approved and student-funded. The 65,945 square foot Recreation Center, includes 2 basketball/4 volleyball courts, 2 racquetball/wallyball courts, full-service locker facilities and over 10,000 square feet of fitness space.

The center offers interactive cooking classes, cardiovascular equipment, weight room, group exercise rooms and student lounge areas. According to research endorsed by the National Intramural-Recreation Sports Association, campus recreation programs contribute to college student satisfaction and retention.

The Student Health Center offers expanded services including exam rooms, triage room, laboratory, pharmacy, classroom and administrator and care provider offices. The 9,300 square foot building is accessible to students with disabilities.

The 11,200 square foot Child Development Center provides on-campus care for more than 100 infants, toddlers and pre-schoolers.
