Celebrate the Year of the Ram at ITC's Asian New Year Festival

(Jan. 28, 2003)--According to Asian tradition, it's the Year of the Ram… a time of good fortune to be spent relaxing and gathering with family and friends.

The Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) invites you to mark the occasion on Feb. 1 at the 16th Asian New Year Festival.

Sponsored by Gunn Dodge, the event will open at 11 a.m. with a Chinese Lion Dance and continue until 5 p.m., offering an exotic blend for visitors of all ages including food, dances from India, Korea, Japan, Hawaii and the Philippines, craft demonstrations and games. Asian arts, crafts and antiques will also be available for purchase.

Among the traditional foods that will be served at this year's festival will be Chinese lo mein, Hawaiian kalua pig, Indian koftha, Japanese sushi, Laotian chicken curry, Malaysian teriyaki chicken, Thai pad thai and Vietnamese goi-guon-raw-guon.

Back by popular demand will be feng shui lectures, children's story readings, puppet shows and cooking classes. There will also be Asian ikebana and bonsai displays; Chinese tangrams (puzzles); Filipino sungka games; Japanese calligraphy, origami and sword demonstrations; Indian rangli, fortune telling, sari wrapping and turban tying; Indonesian arts and crafts; a Korean fashion show; and presentations on Filipino and Indian customs.

Festival admission fees are: $5, adults; $2, children (3-12 years); $3, seniors (65 years or older); $3, military personnel with ID; and free, children 2 years and under and UTSA students and employees with ID.

One of three University of Texas at San Antonio campuses, the ITC is an educational center focusing on Texas history and cultures.
