New freshman advising center opens, Rivera center expands

(Jan. 9, 2003)--As of last month, all freshmen who have declared college majors or who are undeclared within a college are being advised through the new Colleges' Freshman Advising Center (CFAC), housed at the 1604 Campus in temporary quarters in Science Building Room 1.03.02 (formerly student health services). Renovations are now under way for the Multidisciplinary Studies Building Kiva, which will become CFAC's permanent location in late spring of this year.

CFAC's main focus is to advise students around a stronger identification with the colleges, and, therefore, develop stronger connections. The addition of CFAC will also help to distribute the growing demand for freshman advising across two dedicated centers, allowing for a more efficient advising process.

Joan Tsacalis, assistant director of advising, will supervise the center under the oversight of Executive Director of Advising Linda Chalmers.

Undeclared majors at all levels will now receive advising through the Tomas Rivera Center (TRC), which will also expand its successful retention programs to include a new comprehensive support program for undecided freshmen and other targeted programs for at-risk students. The TRC will also expand its learning assistance (including tutoring) and supplemental instruction programs. The TRC continues to be supervised by Patricia Glenn.

Note that the phone number for the TRC has changed to (210) 458-4694, while the CFAC retains the TRC's former extension, (210) 458-5170. Phone extensions for CFAC advisers are also the same. Signage has been placed directing students to the CFAC.

At the Downtown Campus, freshmen who have declared college majors or who are undeclared within a college are now being advised through the Downtown Advising Center, located in Frio Street Building Room1.302, phone (210) 458-2550. Undeclared majors at all levels can receive advisement at the TRC Downtown, located in Durango Building Room 2.114, phone (210) 458-2838.
