UTSA counseling services provides student support groups
(Jan. 17, 2003)--UTSA counseling services announces three support groups for UTSA students including the "Gen 1" Support Group, Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transgender Pride Group and two Women's Personal Growth Groups. The groups provide safe and confidential environments, and are free and open to all enrolled UTSA students.
UTSA first-generation college students are invited to join the "Gen 1" Support Group, targeted at helping Gen 1 students succeed. The focus of the group is on students who are the first members of their families to pursue a college degree and who would like to talk with others about the challenges and demands of college.
Students who want to explore sexual identity issues are invited to attend the Gay-Lesbian-Bisexual-Transgender Pride Group meeting 5-6:30 p.m. Mondays beginning Jan. 20 and running for 8 weeks until Spring Break. The group will create a supportive environment in which participants can share life experiences and examine issues such as coming out, homophobia, heterosexism, personal identity and relationships.
Students are invited to join the Womens Personal Growth Group. The support group is targeted at helping participants explore women's issues. The group will offer feedback and support from other women about self-esteem, body image, relationships, dealing with responsibilities and stress, and defining identity as a woman. Groups will meet 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesdays or 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Fridays beginning the week of Jan. 20. Groups will run for 8 weeks, ending before Spring Break.
