UTSA to host Southwest Guitar Festival Jan. 29-Feb. 2
(Jan. 15, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Music presents the 2003 Southwest Guitar Festival (SWGF) Jan. 29-Feb. 2, 2003. The festival will feature renowned musicians from around the world performing and teaching at several venues in San Antonio.
The SWGF was started in 1991 by guitar professors at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Southwest Texas State University and the University of Texas-Austin as a regional classical guitar festival for students and enthusiasts of guitar music in South Texas and the surrounding regions.
With the mission of presenting critically acclaimed artists and educational
events, the festival has become one of the leading biennial guitar festivals
in the world and was named one of the ten best arts events in the city for
2000 by the San Antonio Express-News. Texas Public Radio will present a series
of programs about the festival before its opening.
This year's festival includes performances by seven soloists and three ensembles.
Two perennial SWGF favorites are Texas-born guitarist Robert Guthrie
and SWGF co-founder Adam Holzman. The opening concert will feature
both Texas virtuosos in a joint recital.
Having won nearly every international competition and performing in most major venues around the world, David Russell will bring his talent to San Antonio for the first time. The winner of the 1997 Guitar Foundation of America competition, Judicael Perroy will represent an emerging generation of guitarists. Included in the 4 o'clock concert series will be Elliot Frank, Juan Carlos Laguna and Jaime Arturo Soria.
Ensembles featured in the festival are Latin Grammy winners Sergio and Odair Assad, who will appear with celebrated violinist Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, the award winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, as well as the U.S./Mexico Guitar Orchestra directed by composer Alan Hirsh.
Events will be at venues throughout San Antonio including: UTSA Downtown Campus, 501 W. Durango Boulevar;, UTSA 1604 Campus, 6900 North Loop 1604 West; Travis Park United Methodist Church, 230 E Travis Street; and Instituto de Mexico, HemisFair Park.
Co-sponsors of the event are Travis Park United Methodist Church, the San Antonio Chamber Music Society, the D'Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts, Texas Public Radio, Savarez Guitar Strings, Aerolitoral, UTSA College of Fine and Liberal Arts, and the Instituto de Mexico en San Antonio.
Tickets can be purchased individually or in three packages. Registration is also available for master classes and a vendor fair, as well as the concerts.
