UTSA music professor opens psychology lecture series

(Jan. 23, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Psychology presents its first research lecture of the semester at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 in Humanities and Social Sciences Building Room 3.01.18 at the 1604 Campus.

The guest lecturer is UTSA Professor Donald Hodges, director of the Institute for Music Research and coordinator of music education, who will speak on "Peeking into the Musical Brain." The presentation is free and open to the public.

Although music is ubiquitous among all human groups, relatively little has been known until recently about how it is represented in the human brain. Hodges will share results of a series of collaborative studies done with the UTSA Institute for Music Research and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Research Imaging Center.

Hodges, who has been at UTSA since 1980, conducted the orchestras for nine years and currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education. He received a B.M.E. from the University of Kansas and an M.M. and Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Austin.

He served as the contributing editor of the "Handbook of Music Psychology" (1980) and published and presented numerous papers at international, national, and regional conferences. Hodges has served on the editorial committees of Update: The Applications of Research in Music Education and the Music Educators Journal, and as president of the Texas Music Educators Conference and Texas Coalition for Music Education.

Previously, he worked with the Philadelphia public schools, University of South Carolina and Southern Methodist University.
