UTSA and partners receive $584k grant for child development center
(Jan. 10, 2003)--Officials at the University of Texas at San Antonio announced Jan. 9 a $584,972 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to build a Child Development Center and Community Resource Center at the Navarro Academy, an inner-city school directly south of the UTSA Downtown Campus.
UTSA Associate Professor Harriett Romo is the principal investigator
for the three-year project, which was honored as the highest ranking proposal
in HUD's Hispanic Serving Institutions Assisting Communities (HSIAC) Program.
Developed in conjuction with the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD),
the center will serve 60 neighborhood children under the age of five. The
center will also function as a community center, providing adult education
and helping families find affordable housing. SAISD will match the HUD grant
with $480,000 in bond money and will maintain ownership of the new facility.
"When this center is built, it will serve as a role model for future
projects," Romo said. "Education should begin at the very early
ages of childhood and continue throughout an individual's life." During
a news conference at the Downtown Campus, Romo thanked each of the community
groups responsible for the coalition that she said enabled the proposal's
success, including the City of San Antonio, SAISD, the Family Services Association,
Inner City Ministries, the SAMM Shelter and La Trinidad Church.
"This project's success is guaranteed because of the broad community
support it has received," said Leilah Powell, an assistant to
San Antonio Mayor Ed Garza. "Public, private and corporate support
are the foundation for the Navarro Academy's new Child Development Center,
and this sharing of resources is a hallmark of San Antonio."
