International research, cultural consortium to meet in San Antonio

(Jan. 30, 2003)--The fourth annual meeting of the Mexico-North Research Network, a nonprofit international consortium, will be Feb. 28-March 1. The University of Texas at San Antonio is a member of the consortium of forty U.S. and Mexican universities, museums, research institutes and cultural centers that share an interest in the southwestern United States and Mexico, and a desire to collaborate on projects focused on research, education and outreach.

Free and open to the UTSA community, the meeting is in the International Conference Room of the City of San Antonio International Center, 203 S. St. Mary's Street. Registration is at 1 p.m. Feb. 28.

The organization collaborates on programs, initiatives and research opportunities related to trans-nationalism, humans and the environment, history and culture, and knowledge and practice. Current programs include a multifaceted biological and anthropological study in Chihuahua's Sierra Tarahumara and other projects related to the Spanish Colonial period.

UTSA faculty members involved in the organization’s activities include: Julius Gribou, Sue Pemberton-Haugh and Jose Jimenez, all of the School of Architecture; Harriett Romo, Department of Sociology and Robert Hard, Department of Anthropology.

The first day's program will include evaluating Mexico-North’s 2002 activities, setting priorities for 2003 and an informational meeting for representatives of new and prospective members, followed by a reception.

The second day's program will focus on two proposed programming initiatives that will be discussed and approved by members. The first would promote development of shared academic programs among member institutions, a collaborative undertaking involving Mexico-North, the Consejo Mexicano de Estudios de Posgrado (COMEPO), the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration (CONAHEC) and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

The second initiative would provide a forum for exploring innovative approaches to communicating knowledge and transcending boundaries between scholars and the larger world. The initiative will be introduced in a presentation, "Cultural Knowledge and Practice: New Roles for Public Universities," by Henry Ingle, associate vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at El Paso.
