Institute of Texan Cultures offers afternoon of O. Henry storytelling

(Jan. 10, 2003)--Many people remember fondly such O. Henry stories as "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Last Leaf," but what most don't know is the famous author wrote several dozen stories set in the Lone Star State. Having lived here for nearly a third of his life, he set many of his tales with the "twist at the end" in South Texas.

Storytellers Donna Ingham and Larry Thompson will share some of their favorite stories in "An Afternoon with O. Henry in South Texas" at 2 p.m. Jan. 12 in the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) Auditorium. Admission for the event is $5, adults; $2, children (3-12 years); and $3, seniors (65 and over) and military personnel with ID. Children 2 years and under will be admitted free.

In conjunction with the event, the exhibit "Photographs and Paragraphs: The Images of I.N. Hall and the Imagery of O. Henry" will be on display through Feb. 23 in the ITC Photo Gallery. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

One of three University of Texas at San Antonio campuses, the ITC is an educational center focusing on Texas history and culture. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday.

For more information, call (210) 458-2300 or visit the ITC Web site.
