Engineering dean serves on Air Force panel on work force needs

(Jan. 14, 2003)--Zorica Pantic-Tanner, dean of the UTSA College of Engineering, recently served as the academia representative on a U.S. Air Force Senior Panel addressing science and engineering work force issues and needs for the 21st century.

The panel, consisting of world-renowned members of the science and engineering community, was chaired by Lt. Gen. Stephen Plummer, principal deputy in the office of the assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition. Plummer is heading an effort to reverse a recent decline in the number of the Air Force's military and civilian scientists and engineers.

The panel assessed a Science Applications International Corp. study which provides targets for skills and work force size in 2010, 2015 and 2025. The panel refined the study's conclusions, discussed the issues and problems in the development and retention of scientists and engineers, and proposed ways for the Air Force and universities to partner.

Additionally, Pantic-Tanner met with Henk Ruck, associate deputy assistant secretary for science, technology and engineering, at the Air Force's national lab in Rosslyn, Va., to discuss proposed research projects. She also met with staff members from the office of U. S. Rep. Charlie Gonzalez to discuss a proposal for federal appropriations to establish a national Center of Excellence for Sustainability Engineering, a joint effort between the Greater Kelly Development Authority and UTSA.

The project would involve renovating a Kelly USA building to facilitate research in material sciences and engineering. The project would refine transportation industry standards for maintenance, repair and overhaul of vehicles and systems with emphasis on assured safety.
