UTSA, all UT System components implement flexible hiring freeze
(Jan. 29, 2003)--As all state agencies and institutions look for ways to cut 7 percent from their budgets to help reduce Texas's revenue shortfall, UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof has asked all system components to immediately implement a flexible hiring freeze.
Under Yudof's directive, announced Tuesday, individual institutions would be allowed to fill positions considered critical to their local operations.
Texas A&M has also announced an across-the board hiring freeze for staff, but not for faculty.
"The University of Texas System will do its part to identify savings that contribute to the solution to the state's economic challenges," Yudof said. "This is the first step in a very difficult process of assessment for us and for the state, as we grapple with the impacts of the economy on the current fiscal year and the upcoming biennium."
UTSA President Ricardo Romo will consider budget-cutting options such as delaying renovation projects, curtailing travel and reducing the hiring of consultants.
Vice presidents are asked to review and recommend on all hiring decisions in their respective areas. A detailed budget-reduction plan for the UT System is expected to be filed by this Friday with state officials.
