Shakespeares in the Barrio participants

San Antonio student 'Shakespeares' receive awards

(July 16, 2003)--More than 75 students, teachers and community members ignored the ill winds of Hurricane Claudette to attend an award ceremony for students who participated in "Shakespeares in the Barrio," a program co-sponsored by UTSA's Office of K-16 Initiatives and the City of San Antonio. The ceremony took place at 7 p.m., July 15, at UTSA's Downtown Campus.

Pictured left to right are Carly Anderson, 1st place winner, essay; Louis Mendoza, Shakespeares in the Barrio program director; Joshua Saucedo, 2nd place winner, dramatic monologue and Daniel Veliz, 1st place winner, dramatic monologue.

Created through a grant from the City of San Antonio Department of Community Initiatives Human Development Fund, the project sought to promote literacy and the cultural arts through direct engagement with San Antonio youth.

The goal of the contest was to acknowledge unrecognized talent and to encourage creativity among San Antnio youth. The program drew on all-volunteer support from UTSA faculty members and local poets.

Louis Mendoza, associate dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts at the Downtown Campus, led the project. Faculty members Bernadette Andrea, Kamala Platt and Bill Mullen also participated.
