Art of UTSA alumna featured in Venice Biennale exhibition
(July 29, 2003)--Paintings by UTSA alumna Haydee Victoria Suescum is featured in the 50th Venice Biennale international art exhibition through November 2 in Venice, Italy.
The Biennale is an interdisciplinary cultural society concerned with visual arts, architecture, dance, music, theatre and cinema. The group organizes international exhibitions of art, architecture and film, and live performances of dance, music and theater.
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1961, Suescum received a bachelor of fine arts degree from Wellesley College in 1983. She continued her studies at the New York Studio School and The University of Texas at San Antonio, where she earned a master's degree in painting in 1990.
Pictured is Suescum's three-plate relief print with digital print frame of the painting, "ZAS," 2003, which is featured in the Biennale and a multimedia print edition. Suescum's work translates hand-painted signage seen in the Spanish-speaking areas of the Americas, including San Antonio. "Zas" is Spanish onomatopoeic slang for speed, reflected by the flames flying off the speeding tire in the print.
"ZAS" is framed in blue inflatable tubes and accessorized with vinyl pompoms. The compositions in the exhibit use humor to contrast people's dreams of material wealth and high technology with a low-tech painting style. Absurd changes in scale, bright colors and a sense of humor characterize Suescom's compositions in the exhibit.
