CIAS to open with Aug. 8 ceremony and luncheon

(July 28, 2003)--The Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS) will formally open with a luncheon and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m., Friday, August 8, in the University Center Laurel Room (2.01.28) at the UTSA 1604 Campus.

The cost of the event is $30 with proceeds supporting information technology scholarships.

Special guests at the event include Rep. Henry Bonilla, R-Texas; Maj. Gen. Paul J. Lebras, commander of the Air Intelligence Agency and Lee Sutterfield, chair of the CIAS Advisory Board.

The luncheon and ceremony are part of the daylong Texas Security Symposium, which includes reports on Texas infrastructure protection, security exercises and an update on the Dark Screen project. Breakout sessions will be offered in both executive and technical tracks.

CIAS was established in 2001 to leverage San Antonio's infrastructure assurance strengths and to bolster research and educational initiatives in this field. The multidisciplinary research center is partnered with the San Antonio community to address the technical and policy issues of information assurance.

UTSA is the first Texas university and one of 50 in the nation with the "Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education" designation by the National Security Agency. The designation means UTSA's curriculum and faculty meet or exceed NSA standards to teach information-assurance security and makes the university eligible to apply for grants from NSA and the National Science Foundation.

Reservations for the event must be received by Aug. 5. To make a reservation, download the registration form and return it by mail, fax or e-mail.
