UTSA, senator host chili cook-off to benefit law institute
(July 10, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio and Sen. Leticia
Van de Putte will sponsor the first Great Chili Cook-Off to benefit the
UTSA Institute of Law and Public Affairs South Frio Scholarship Fund from
10 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 12 at the South Frio Grill, 801 S. Frio Street. Chili
judging will be at 5:30 p.m.
"Higher education has always been one of my top priorities while serving
as a state legislator," said Van de Putte. "My belief in the tremendous
positive impact of the institute has motivated me to co-sponsor the Great
Chili Cook-Off, which benefits such a terrific program."
"The vast majority of students enrolled in the institute have serious
financial needs," said Richard Gambitta, institute director and
chair of the UTSA Department of Political Science and Geography. "We
need scholarships and stipends to liberate students from the financial pressures
that obstruct many South Texas students from the full-time focus necessary
for extraordinary performance in a highly rigorous academic program."
The educational mission of the institute is to establish a premier pre-law
program to serve as a model for public universities around the country, and
to increase significantly the number of South Texas students who secure admission
to and excel in quality law schools.
The event is free and open to the public. Cook-off entries are $125 and are
limited to the first 20 paid applicants.
