Luis Haro
UTSA biology professor to lead national science organization
(July 21, 2003)--Luis Haro, assistant professor of cell and molecular biology in The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Sciences, has been elected president of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).
With a national membership of nearly 2,000, SACNAS encourages Chicano/Latino and Native American students to pursue graduate education and to obtain the advanced degrees necessary for research careers and science teaching professions at all levels.
Haro, a SACNAS member for more than 23 years, is the first former student to be elected president of the organization.
"In this position, I would like to create more student chapters and expand the public's awareness of the organization," said Haro. "In addition, I would like SACNAS to expand into more science and engineering disciplines and expand our funding portfolio."
SACNAS received the 2002 National Science Board Public Service Award for increasing public understanding of science and engineering. The annual award recognizes outstanding contributions to communicating, promoting or helping to develop broad public policy in science and engineering.
