corn shucking at Pioneer Life

'Pioneer Life' at Institute of Texan Cultures offers hands-on experience

(June 16, 2003)--Experience life on the frontier as your great-grandparents lived it at "Pioneer Life" from 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesdays through Saturdays, June 17-Aug. 9 at the Institute of Texan Cultures (ITC) Back 40 in downtown San Antonio.

Pictured are a young man and a "pioneer" at the corn shucker.

Participants will learn about life on the plains in the hands-on activities at the event. Activities include shucking corn in the barn and scrubbing clothes on a washboard in the log cabin. Take lessons in the one-room schoolhouse, but be prepared to stand in the corner wearing a dunce cap if caught acting up.

For the daring, join the cavalry at the fort and see how soldiers endured wool uniforms during the Texas summers. At the last post, try to rope a steer and embark on the rugged trails of the 1800s. Admission to "Pioneer Life" includes admittance to the ITC Exhibit Floor.

One of three University of Texas at San Antonio campuses, the ITC is an educational center focusing on Texas history and cultures.

The Exhibit Floor is open Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday noon-5 p.m. Admission fees are: $5, adults; $2, children (3-12 years); $3, seniors (65 years or older); $3, military personnel with ID; and free, members, UTSA students and employees and children 2 years and under.

For more information, call (210) 458-2330 or visit the Institute of Texan Cultures Web site.
