Social Security number access to Banner ASAP ends July 1

(June 2, 2003)--As of July 1, UTSA faculty and students will no longer be able to log in to Banner ASAP with their Social Security number (SSN). As of that date, they will have to use their Banner ID number. For security reasons, the use of the SSN as a key into the Banner Web system is being phased out.

Last spring, Office of Information Technology (OIT) personnel programmed the system to prompt users entering a SSN to use their Banner ID. A pop-up note appears on the screen to inform users of the July 1 change. Each student, faculty or staff member using the Banner system was assigned a Banner ID.

"Social Security numbers were not intended to be used as an identifier to security-sensitive student data," said Joe DeChristoforo, assistant vice president and university registrar. "Colleges and universities all over the country have been making this change for a while now, and I feel we will have a more secure records system as a result of this change."

For more information, contact Joe DeCristoforo at (210) 458-8000.
