UTSA student wins writing contest, helps direct film

(June 11, 2003)--UTSA anthropology student Wendy Winger recently traveled to Bastrop to serve as assistant director of a film for which she wrote the script.

As a member of the newly formed student group Script Writers Inc., Winger entered "The Copper Coffin" in a contest sponsored by UUTV, a cable-access channel in Bastrop. Scripts entered in the competition could be on any topic, but no longer than 10 minutes.

In the style of a "Twilight Zone" episode, "The Copper Coffin" takes place in the 1970s at an archaeological dig site. A 5,000-year-old mummy is discovered at the site in a copper coffin, along with illustrations of a young woman. The pictures are discovered by a young woman who resembles the illustrations. She begins having dreams of traveling in time to ancient Egypt, but when the pictures are stolen the thief literally becomes a time traveler.

Winger directed several shots in the film and worked with some of the actors throughout the filming.

"It was a very empowering experience and it definitely showed me that I could do this myself," said Winger.

Winger was so inspired that she is working on another script based in an Army setting. She has scouted out several UTSA sites at which to film the production.
