Mr. and Ms. UTSA 2003 named at Homecoming game

(March 4, 2003)--Students Andrew Gutierrez and Kristy Pacheco were named Mr. and Ms. UTSA 2003 at the Feb. 24 basketball Homecoming game.

Throughout the year, Mr. and Ms. UTSA represent the university and the Alumni Association at a variety of events including Fiesta San Antonio and Roadrunner Camp.

The UTSA Student Alumni Association sponsors the annual Mr. and Ms. UTSA contest held each spring during Homecoming. The contest recognizes students who embody the spirit of UTSA through academic achievements, campus involvement and community service.

The winners were chosen last month in an online vote by UTSA students, after a panel of faculty, staff and alumni judges interviewed candidates and narrowed the list of finalists to three men and three women.

Andrew Gutierrez is a senior business management major sponsored by the Registered Student Organization (RSO) Council. He currently serves as vice president for promotions for the RSO Council. He is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and serves as vice president-internal of the organization. He is vice president-internal of the Student Government Association and is a member of the Student Alumni Association.

Gutierrez received the Lambda Chi Alpha Associate Member of the Semester award, the Brother of the Semester award and is listed in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. In the spring of 2002 he participated in the Junior Achievement program at Brackenridge High School. Andrew plans to attend graduate school at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Kristy Pacheco is a senior majoring in communications sponsored by the RSO Council, where she currently serves as president. Her many memberships include: Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, where she serves as vice president of administration; the UTSA Ambassadors, Student Government Association GAP counselor; the UTSA Student Alumni Association; Public Relations Student Society of America and Rho Lambda Honor Society.

Her awards and honors include Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; the Faith, Hope and Love Award of Alpha Omicron Pi and the Golden Feather Award. Her community involvement includes Big Brothers and Big Sisters, March of Dimes and volunteering at the Baptist Medical Center. Upon graduation Pacheco plans to pursue a master's degree in educational administration with an emphasis in student affairs.
