UTSA history professor honored with medal from King of Spain
(March 17, 2003)--During a recent ceremony in San Antonio, Spanish Ambassador Javier Ruperez (left) bestowed one of Spain's highest honors, the Medal of the Order of Civil Merit to UTSA Professor of History Felix D. Almaraz Jr. (center).
Almaraz, a noted historian, writer and teacher, accepted the award before a symposium celebrating the relationship between the Canary Islands and San Antonio. Ruperez represented Spain's King Juan Carlos I as he presented the award.
San Antonio cardiologist Alfonso Chiscano (right), president of the Friends of the Canary Islands Foundation, assisted in the ceremony and symposium. Immigrants from the Canary Islands were some of San Antonio's first settlers in the early 18th century.
Almaraz was honored for his "long-term commitment to research and composition devoted to the Spanish Borderlands in North American History," according to Ambassador Ruperez.
