"The Toreador" by Mary Cassatt, 1873, oil on canvas,
Art Institute of Chicago
Art Institute of Chicago curator to speak March 12 at UTSA
(March 10, 2003)--Judith A. Barter, Field-McCormick Curator of American
Arts at the Art Institute of Chicago, will speak on "Mary Cassatt and
the Fashionable Spectacle" at noon Wednesday, March 12 in the UTSA University
Center Retama Room (2.02.02). The lecture is free and open to the public.
Sponsored by the San Antonio Museum of Art and the UTSA Department of Art
and Art History, the lecture is presented as part of Women's History Month.
The lecture will also be presented at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 at the San
Antonio Museum of Art.
Barter will discuss the heroic life and inspiring career of painter Mary Cassatt. The lecture will include discussion of several of Cassatt's greatest paintings and provide insight about what it meant to be both a woman and an American artist in Paris.
Barter will describe Cassatt's most important aesthetic discovery upon her return to Paris in 1873, after being forced to leave during the 1870 Franco-Prussian war. The lecture will include discussion of Cassatt's association with French painter Edgar Degas and her acceptance in the French Impressionist circle.
Cassatt was the only American to exhibit with the original Impressionist group. Like her friend Degas, she was a highly skilled draftsman who preferred unposed, asymmetrical compositions. The theme of women caring for children appeared frequently in Cassatt's art during and after the 1880s.
Barter's books are available in the San Antonio Museum of Art store. They
include: "Mary Cassatt: Modern Woman" and "American Art at
the Art Institute of Chicago."
