UTSA cancels proposed August 2003 commencement ceremony

(March 31, 2003)--Due to cutbacks in appropriations from the state, UTSA will cancel an August 2003 commencement ceremony proposed earlier by the UTSA administration.

As one of the fastest growing universities in Texas, the university's proposed commencement ceremony was scheduled to accommodate the increasing number of UTSA graduates.

"Due to larger numbers of graduates each semester, UTSA already conducts three ceremonies each commencement day in the spring and the fall," said Rosalie Ambrosino, vice president for student affairs. "We have had a number of requests to honor summer graduates in August, but we must postpone those plans until the university -- and the state -- is in a better financial situation."

This would have been the first time in the history of UTSA for an August commencement ceremony to take place. Since the original proposal for an August ceremony was drafted, UTSA was informed that it must make a seven percent cut to its current budget and a 12.5 percent cut during the next biennium.

"During this time of fiscal restraint, the primary focus of the university must be on offering classes and essential services to our students," Ambrosino said.

As in past years, August 2003 graduates will be invited to participate in the December 2003 commencement ceremonies.
