Author to analyze urban Latino creativity at Downtown Campus

(March 11, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio will host author Raul Villa in its second annual UTSA Downtown Speaker Series at 7 p.m. March 13 in the Buena Vista Street Building Aula Canaria (1.328). Free and open to the public, the event will be followed by a reception and book signing.

Villa, an associate professor of comparative literature and cultural studies at Occidental College, will discuss urban Latino creativity. He is the author of "Barrio-Logos: Space and Place in Urban Chicano Literature and Culture" and "Urban Latino Cultures: La vida latina en L.A.," which analyze how urban Latinos create culturally specific environments through artistic cultural practices.

"I think that I could provide an interesting account of Latino place-making practices in the principal regions of my research," said Villa. "It should allow for useful comparisons and contrasts to similar creative expressions in the barrios of San Antonio."

In its second year, the UTSA Downtown Speaker Series 2003 will focus on the ways people express creativity in urban settings. Additional speakers are scheduled for June 2003.
