Actors From The London Stage to perform 'The Tempest' at UTSA
(March 24, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of English, Classics, and Philosophy host a return of Actors From The London Stage (AFTLS) this week in Shakespeares "The Tempest." The touring ensemble of five British actors will perform at 7:30 p.m. March 26, 28 and 29 in the Arts Building Recital Hall on the UTSA 1604 Campus.
Actors from such companies as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain will play multiple roles in the production that utilizes an uncut script, simple costumes and minimal scenery with an emphasis on language.
The AFTLS troupe visits selected American universities each year to perform and conduct classes and workshops. In the company's sixteenth UTSA residency, "The Tempest" features three actors who appeared in previous AFTLS productions.
One of Shakespeare's last and shortest plays, "The Tempest" tells the story of Prospero, the former Duke of Milan, who is banished to a remote island with his daughter Miranda. The story includes romance, power, revenge and the struggles involved in challenging authority to gain freedom.
"The Tempest" was the basis for the classic 1950s science fiction film "Forbidden Planet" with Walter Pidgeon and Anne Francis.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $7 for students with ID, and are available at the University Center ticket office on the UTSA 1604 Campus. All seats are reserved.
