2003 Texas Folklife poster: 'Bring Your Own Culture'
(May 5, 2003)--UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures unveiled the 2003 Texas Folklife Festival commemorative poster May 1 -- the 23rd in a series of posters that began in 1981. This year's theme is "Bring Your Own Culture to the Texas Folklife Festival."
The Texas Folklife Festival will be June 5-8 at UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures in downtown San Antonio.
The 2003 poster was designed by Claudia Schlosser and also will appear on festival T-shirts. The poster and other souvenir products can be purchased at various retail outlets in San Antonio, local art galleries, the Institute of Texan Cultures Store and during the Festival at souvenir carts located around the festival grounds.
"This image captures the spirit and intricacies of Texas history and the wonderful cultures that shape the Lone Star State," said Texas Folklife Festival Director JoAnn Andera. "Claudia Schlosser is a wonderful artist who understands what this festival means to the community."
Schlosser, a German immigrant, began pursuing a career utilizing her talent after moving to San Antonio in 1980. Her work, reminiscent of M.C. Escher, invites the viewer to take a closer look at the things encountered in daily life.
"I wanted to create an image which is fun, colorful and hopeful," said Schlosser. I hope that one of these days we'll just see each other as fellow human beings and not as rivals or enemies. Since I am from another country myself, the issue of tolerance is always close to my heart. Hopefully this poster will serve as a small visual reminder of how similar we are despite our differences."
The signed, certified limited edition of the 2003 Texas Folklife Festival commemorative poster can be purchased for $50; the unsigned version is $20. The poster's dimensions are 20 inches wide by 24 inches high.
