Adopt-A-Hallway program touts benefits of higher education

(May 7, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors College Adopt-A-Hallway (AAH) program centers on encouraging elementary, middle and high school students to attend a college or university upon graduation.

Participants in the program, now in its second year, recently went to area schools to draw students' attention to the idea of attending college.

The idea is promoted through decorating a portion of a school's hallway with UTSA paraphernalia. Then AAH participants go to the schools and talk to students about the benefits of higher education and the college experience. Participation in AAH is open to all UTSA faculty, staff and students.

As part of the AAH program, K-16 Initiatives staff members provide presentations about services from their office that help UTSA students throughout their educational careers.

The UTSA Office of K-16 Initiatives and Honors College strives to increase UTSA's partnerships and collaborations with schools, business and industry, and community-based organizations and foundations to strengthen the quality of education in San Antonio and South Texas from kindergarten to college.

As a comprehensive university-wide effort, the office seeks to provide leadership in education reform and facilitate university involvement in public education through research and service.
