Board of Regents approves new student housing facility
(May 9, 2003)--The University of Texas System Board of Regents approved Thursday a $45 million UTSA student housing project. The 1,000-bed project, one of the largest UT System projects in a decade, will include several three-story buildings with one- and two-bedroom units and a dining facility.

With more than 22,000 students and growing, UTSA is undergoing a shift from a student body of nontraditional students to one of a more traditional college age. The average student age of nearly 26 in Fall 1996 dropped to 24.6 in Fall 2001.
As of Fall 2002, 39 percent of UTSA students came from outside Bexar County -- an increase from 26 percent in 1992. With changing student demographics such as these, on-campus student housing is in increasing demand and has become a higher priority.
Groundbreaking for the student housing facility is set for this summer with occupancy planned for the Fall 2004 semester.
