UTSA Downtown garage opens to summer students

(May 21, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio Downtown Campus parking garage will be open to students enrolled in summer classes.

The parking facility remains open for use by students, staff and faculty with permits. The change in the parking status is due in part to the recent cancellation of the UTSA Downtown Campus parking shuttle which took students between the parking lots under I-35, I-10 and the UTSA Downtown Campus Frio Street Building entrance.

"After close observation, the university has decided to discontinue the service due to low usage," said Dan Pena, UTSA assistant chief of police. "The main reason for the declining use has been the opening of the Durango Loop parking lot which offers parking convenient to the campus. Additionally, with most faculty and staff parking in the Downtown Campus garage, more parking is made available for students in the Durango Loop parking lot."

With this change in service, parking in the garage will open to summer students on levels B2 and B3 Monday through Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Level B1 remains reserved at all times for garage administration permit holders.

UTSA plans to monitor parking and transportation needs during the upcoming semester to determine whether student parking in the garage will continue to be permitted through the fall semester.

The former shuttle bus drivers have been reassigned to patrol duties of the Downtown Campus buildings and grounds to provide enhanced security and visibility of police personnel.
