University to hold firm on July 1 application deadline
(May 20, 2003)--Following a record 11 percent increase in student enrollment last fall, The University of Texas at San Antonio is again poised to enroll a record number of students for the fall 2003 semester.
"At this time, the number of undergraduate applications to UTSA has increased 26 percent over the same time last year," said Rosalie Ambrosino, vice president for student affairs. "While this may not be indicative of the actual increase in the number of students who do enroll, the increase does have us convinced that a record number of students may be enrolled next year."
In response to increasing demands on resources by the growing enrollment at UTSA, the university will hold firm to the July 1, 2003, application deadline for fall semester 2003.
"In order to best serve students during a time of increasing enrollment and shrinking resources, we must hold rigidly to this deadline," said UTSA assistant vice president of admissions, George E. Norton. "In recent years, UTSA has permitted students to apply beyond that deadline, but we just cannot accept late applications this year and meet the needs of students who already have been admitted."
UTSA will accept applications for fall semester 2003 through the end of business July 1, 2003. Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, and students who apply by July 1, will have adequate time to complete the application process, seek financial aid and attend an orientation/registration session.
"Even with this deadline, I still encourage anyone to apply as soon as possible and well before the application deadline," Norton said. "On-campus housing is nearly full and seats in classes are quickly filling up as our students register for fall."
In order to meet the increasing demand for student housing arrangements, UTSA is working in cooperation with several apartment complexes near the campus and plans to offer UTSA shuttle service to some of those locations. Prospective students or families seeking information on housing options should check the UTSA housing Web site or call the Office of Student Life at (210) 458-4720.
Last week, the University of Texas System Board of Regents approved a $45 million, 1,000-bed student housing project for UTSA. Consisting of several three-story buildings with two- and four-bedroom units and a dining hall, the housing complex is scheduled for completion before the fall 2004 semester. Currently, UTSA has on-campus housing for approximately 2,100 students.
The university recently opened a new Recreation and Wellness Center on the 1604 Campus, and is completing an annex to the Durango Building at the Downtown Campus, where enrollment increased 40 percent last fall.
