UTSA students' public relations campaign nets honor
(May 2, 2003)--University of Texas at San Antonio communication students Leslie Hennig, Catherine Jung, Ana Marinez, Mandie Monkhouse and Nicole Nuese received honorable mention recognition for their public relations campaign at the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) National Bateman Case Study Competition.
UTSA's Lonestar Communications team received honorable mention along with 11 other teams including Maryland, Syracuse, Penn State and South Carolina. The schools are known nationally and internationally for their top-rated public relations programs.
More than 65 teams from across the nation participated in the competition, with three teams receiving top honors. Last year, UTSA communication students also received honorable mention in the schools first team entry.
Team member Jung said, "The opportunity to participate in such a highly
regarded event has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I have learned many
skills that I can apply in a public relations career following graduation.
I would highly encourage students with an interest in public relations to
participate in next year's competition.
Ali Kanso El-Ghori, academic adviser for the Lone Star Communications
team said, "I am very impressed that our UTSA students, who received
notice about the competition at the last minute, were able to plan, implement
and evaluate a whole campaign in two months and achieve honorable mention
for their efforts. Other schools started planning three months in advance
of their campaigns."
Since 1973, the National Bateman Case Study Competition has given college students the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world public relations campaign. This year's sponsor, Ferrero, U.S.A., selected Nutella, a chocolate hazelnut spread from Italy, as the client to be promoted.
Participating teams were challenged to increase awareness and use of Nutella among college students and on-campus trades. Lone Star Communications increased awareness at UTSA from 35 percent to 76.5 percent in three weeks and exceeded all campaign objectives.
PRSSA is a pre-professional organization comprised of 232 chapters and more than 7,000 students nationwide. The organization helps to enhance students knowledge of public relations while providing access to professional development opportunities.
