UTSA men's basketball signs players from across U.S.
(May 29, 2003)--The University of Texas at San Antonio men's basketball team recently announced the signing of four players to national letters of intent, bringing to seven the number of players added to the team for next season.
Signing with UTSA are 6-11, 220-pound junior center Anthony Fuqua from Northern Oklahoma College; 6-10, 220-pound freshman center/forward Dwain Hall from Brusly (La.) High School; 6-6, 205-pound junior forward John Millsap from Navarro (Texas) Junior College; and 5-9, 160-pound junior point guard Reggie Wallace from Mount San Antonio (Calif.) College.
The four join three early signees -- 6-2 freshman point guard Kurt Attaway from Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus High School; 6-2 junior guard Raphael Posey from Barton County (Kan.) Junior College; and 6-5 freshman forward Kenton Warren from Chapel Hill (Texas) High School, with all signing during the early period.
"We feel we have improved ourselves considerably in a number of areas for next season," said UTSA head coach Tim Carter. "Our team size, depth and skill has gone up in a big way. I'm excited with what we have coming back and what's coming in. It should make for an interesting mix of players going into the coming season."
Fuqua, a native of Largo, Md., averaged 11.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game last season at Northern Oklahoma. He averaged 20 minutes of playing time per game as a sophomore.
Hall, a native of Baton Rouge, La., averaged 15.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game at Brusly as a senior.
Millsap, a native of Grambling, La., averaged 16.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game at Navarro as a sophomore.
Wallace, a Pasadena, Calif. native, averaged 16.0 points and 8.0 assists per game at Mount San Antonio as a sophomore. He was named first team all-South Coast Conference after this past season.
Attaway, who was recently ranked amongst the Top-40 seniors in Texas by Mike Kunstadt's Basketball Review magazine, will be coming to UTSA with outstanding credentials. The 180-pound point guard averaged 12.0 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game last season.
Posey, the Topeka (Kan.) High School Player of the Year in 2000, averaged 12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds as a sophomore at Barton County. As a freshman he played for a Barton team which advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament where they finished seventh in the nation. Posey averaged 19.5 points and 8.0 rebounds a game as a senior at Topeka Highland Park High School. He led his team to a third place state finish.
Warren, a 3A first team all-state, all-region and All-East Texas selection, was nominated for the McDonald's All-American team this past year. The Offensive Player of the Year in District 16-3A, he averaged 20.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.5 steals a game for Chapel Hill, which was an area finalist this past season. He led the state in 3-point shots for all UIL classes and private schools as a junior, connecting on 96 of 191 (50.2%) from behind the arc.
