Biotechnology groundbreaking marks UTSA milestone

(May 27, 2003)--All members of the UTSA community are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the UTSA Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering Building at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 28 at the southeast corner of the Engineering Building, 1604 Campus.

UT System Chancellor Mark Yudof will join UTSA President Ricardo Romo, UTSA Development Board Chairman Tom Frost and other officials at the ceremony marking the beginning of the two-year construction project for the $83.7 million facility.

The five-story atrium building will be the largest at UTSA and one of the biggest and most sophisticated science classroom facilities among public universities in Texas.

The facility will house faculty offices and research and instructional labs to accommodate graduate students studying biotechnology, biology, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering and chemistry.

The 227,000-square-foot facility was designed by FKP Architects, Inc., Houston, and will be built by J.T. Vaughn Construction, Inc., San Antonio.
