Diploma Dash continues successful 5K run with nearly $6K

(May 14, 2003)--The 19th annual UTSA Diploma Dash 5K Run/City Championship Race continued its successful run, delivering scholarship money for both the UTSA Alumni Association and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics track and field programs. The Feb. 22 run attracted 842 participants and raised $5,600.

"The UTSA Diploma Dash is a premier running event in San Antonio," said Jane Findling, director of alumni programs and executive director of the UTSA Alumni Association, after recently presenting a check for $1,500 to UTSA Director of Athletics Lynn Hickey.

"We are very appreciative of the annual contributions from the Alumni Association and the Diploma Dash for our track and field programs," said Hickey. "To be able to count on that every year is very important for us as we continue to build our programs to national prominence."

"It has something for everyone, including a fitness walk around the beautiful UTSA campus and a health fair with numerous health screenings provided to participants," added Findling. "All of this helps to give the event a broad appeal."

Refreshments, music and children's activities round out the offerings each year at the event. UTSA faculty, staff and student volunteers, as well as alumni and other friends from the community help stage the event. The Alumni Association has been involved in all 19 of the scholarship fund-raising events which began as the Hightailer, became Dollars for Scholars, and is now trademarked as the Diploma Dash.
