Share hearth, home and country with Russian exchange students

(May 15, 2003)--Kathleen Rueppel, Russian lecturer in the UTSA Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, is currently interviewing prospective host families for high school students from former Soviet republics who will arrive in August for the 2003-2004 school year.

The student residencies are through the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. All of the students speak English, have full medical coverage and will receive a monthly stipend from their governments to cover their incidental expenses.

"Host families come in all shapes and sizes and all are welcome to apply," said Rueppel. "We welcome applications from single parents, young couples and retirees. The families need only supply a room for sleeping and study, meals and a warm, supportive environment."

According to Rueppel, the exchange students are interested in staying with American families to learn about our way of life and to teach us about their cultures. As part of the mission of learning how a democratic, free-market society functions, they will take the knowledge back to their countries to act as instruments of change in society.

In addition to attending high school, the students will be active in community affairs by attending San Antonio City Council meetings and working with the underprivileged. They will present seminars at the high school and college levels to acquaint area residents with the cultures of their home countries and will tour local businesses to learn about running a business on an everyday basis.
