UTSA literacy professor receives education award

(May 8, 2003)--Rosalind Horowitz, professor of discourse and literacy studies in The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Education and Human Development, has received the University of Minnesota's prestigious Gordon M. A. Mork Outstanding Educator Award for internationally recognized contributions to the field of reading and literacy.

Named for a Minnesota professor emeritus of educational administration and policy studies, the award from the College of Education and Human Development Alumni Society has been granted yearly since 1968.

"Rosalind Horowitz has helped to position UTSA as a top-tier research school and as a premier Hispanic-serving institution through dissemination of her research, international projects and lectures for which she is famous... Her service to teacher education and in the local school districts and communities of South Texas has been exceptional," said UTSA President Ricardo Romo.

Horowitz earned a bachelor of science in English and speech education degree (1968), a master of arts in English education and speech communication (rhetoric) degree (1973) and a doctorate of philosophy in reading and English education (1982), all from the University of Minnesota.

At Minnesota, Horowitz trained in the Institute of Child Development and was research coordinator for the College of Education. Minnesota has been ranked among the top five U.S. universities in reading and literacy research. U.S. News and World Report ranked the Institute of Child Development's research as first in the world.

A UTSA professor since 1981, Horowitz was instrumental in establishing the Office of Research Development. She served as reading education program coordinator and research coordinator in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and was chair of the College of Education Graduate Council and is a member of the President's Committee for the Advancement and Professional Development of Women.

Horowitz has published more than 60 articles and served on the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals. She is most known for her book, "Comprehending Oral and Written Language," used internationally in doctoral courses and cited by a range of scholars including developmental and educational psychologists, literacy experts and curriculum and instruction researchers.

With research centering on the development of children, adolescents and adults in literacy and writing, her recent work analyzes how talk and texts interface to create meaning for learners.

The National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association have recognized Horowitz for her research. In 1998, she was selected by the Department of Defense and University of Iowa as a visiting scholar to Russia and Ukraine, where she worked with linguists and psychologists to learn about shifting cultural perspectives and language changes in post-Soviet society.
