
UTSA faculty, students receive awards at international conference
(May 2, 2003)--Three faculty members and four students from The University of Texas at San Antonio Department of Communication presented their research projects at the 15th Annual International Academy of Business Disciplines (IABD) Conference held April 3-6 in Orlando, Fla.
At the conference, Associate Professor Ali Kanso El-Ghori was honored for the best practitioner-oriented paper for his study, "Struggling to Restore a Battered Corporate Reputation: The Tobacco Dilemma Facing Philip Morris Executives."
Senior communication student Lisa Pfeiffer received a certificate for the "Best Undergraduate Student Paper" for her case study, "H-E-B's Commitment to the Community: A Case Study of a Grocery Chains Potential Public Relations Problem," one of two papers she presented at the conference.
Former IABD President Richard Nelson of Louisiana State University said, "These awards clearly demonstrate the quality of the communication program at UTSA."
Additionally, UTSA assistant professors Paul LeBlanc and Deborah Manning and communication students Sarah Iverson, Catherine Jung and Vanessa Vega presented research projects at the conference.
Ten papers from UTSA communication faculty and students were published in the internationally recognized, peer-reviewed "Business Research Yearbook" of the IABD the most papers published from a single university.
IABD members from the United States and more than 20 countries including Australia, Austria, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Netherlands, Norway, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, St. Thomas, Sweden, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom, attended this year's conference.
San Antonio will be the site of the 16th Annual IABD Conference in March 2004. Faculty members and students from the UTSA Department of Communication will play a vital role in organizing and implementing the conference.
The IABD was established in 1987 as a worldwide, nonprofit organization with the main goal of bridging the gap between academics and the professional community. The academy is committed to stimulating ideas across disciplines and exchanging research results from around the world.
