Distinguished Achievement: Chancellor's teaching award

(May 1, 2003)--Richard L. Utecht, associate professor of marketing, received the Chancellor's Council Outstanding Teaching Award during the university’s annual Faculty Honors Convocation April 30.

The award recognizes outstanding teaching at the undergraduate level and is funded by a grant from the Chancellor's Council of The University of Texas System.

Utecht, who teaches courses in marketing and advertising in the College of Business, consistently receives very high teacher evaluation ratings in his department, and some of the highest in the College of Business. Whether his classes are small or large, he continues to be effective in connecting with students. In return, his students respond to his high expectations.

Last fall, he drew on his knowledge of advertising and love of teaching to participate in an innovative freshman seminar, The Business of Pop Culture.

Utecht is the internship coordinator for the marketing department and chair of the Teaching Effectiveness Committee in his college. He frequently counsels and advises students about graduate school options, job placement and resume-building. In fact, when he's in his office, chances are at least one student is there as well.

Over the years, Utecht's excellence in the classroom has been recognized many times by UTSA and the College of Business. Even though he has received these awards, he continues to strive for improvement and excellence in teaching.

"I try to help students conceptualize the discipline of marketing and to accept accountability for their education," said Utecht. "The whole idea is to get them to be independent of you [the professor]. The true measure of their learning is not their grade, or scores; if they can hold an intelligent conversation about marketing with someone six months down the road, that's learning."

A native of San Antonio, his B.B.A. and M.B.A. are from Texas A&I University; his Ph.D. in marketing is from North Texas State University.
