Graduate Student Success Program

Article on UTSA Today about the grant: http://www.utsa.edu/today/2008/01/trcgrant.cfm

This program, funded by a TG Grant for the upcoming Spring and Summer 2008 semesters (http://www.tgslc.org/newsroom/news/2007/press070919.cfm), will provide graduate students access to programs that ensure their success in graduate school. The three sub-programs that this grant will provide for are:

Graduate Peer Advisors

Looking for a fun and safe environment to launch your graduate studies? Graduate Peer Advisors will be available to all incoming graduate students in spring and summer 2008. These Peer Advisors will coordinate groups of students for activities such as workshops on optimal study habits, intramural sports (table tennis or kickball), mixers, and other activities meant to socialize you to your profession and your studies. If you are interested in joining one of the groups, please email Melissa Thomas, Program Coordinator, at Melissa.thomas@utsa.edu or call her at (210)458-4691.

Graduate Writing Consultants

Writing consultants (graduate students trained to consult with students about their writing) will be available to all graduate students this spring and summer 2008. These consultations will take place at the Writing Center (http://www.utsa.edu/twc) and the upmost care will be taken to make sure that a Consultant is available during regular operating hours. Check back here for more information about this service, but be sure to bring by your papers and get them reviewed. (Please remember that the Writing Center does not edit papers for you, but instead reviews them with you- so as to build your skills as a writer!)

Writing Institutes

Writing Institute Application

Have a large writing project that you are struggling with? Want additional help with that thesis or dissertation? During the week of Spring Break (March 17-21) and the May Mini-mester (May 12-23) you can attend a Writing Institute and make solid progress on your paper and your writing skills.

Each day will begin with lessons on good writing, grammar, editing, and revision. Lunch will be provided while disciplinary groups will collaborate. The afternoon is structured writing time, with writing consultations available as needed. This “boot camp” style approach has been very successful for many other graduate students across the country and we hope that it helps you too! If you are interested in joining the Writing Institute, please email Melissa Thomas, Melissa.thomas@utsa.edu for the application.
