John "J.R." Helton has been teaching writing at UTSA for twelve years. He has an MFA in Creative Writing from Texas State University and was a Plan II student at UT Austin where he received a degree in English Literature. J.R. Helton is also a published writer and the author of five books: Below the Line, a memoir on his experiences in the film industry, Man and Beast, a memoir on animal rescue, and the novelDrugs, published by Seven Stories Press in New York. A french collection of his work, Au Texas Tu Serais Deja Mort was published by 13th Note Editions in Paris in 2011 as was the French edition of Drugs in 2012 as Voyage Au Bout De La Blanche. The artist R. Crumb has painted three original covers for his books including his next novel The Jugheads which Seven Stories Press is publishing in 2014. Helton has published a number of short stories and poems in such literary magazines as The Sun, The Missouri Review, and Mineshaft. He won an Honorable Mention Pushcart Prize for his short story "About Three Years Ago." He is currently working on his novel "Finding the Cure for Cancer."  More information on his writing is available at
