ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
3003 Language and Schooling
(3-0) 3 hours credit.
A study of the language in educational contexts focusing on the needs of language minority students. Particular attention is given to linguistics and sociolinguistics approaches to oral language development, reading, and writing.
3023 Second Language Teaching and Learning in EC–4
(3-0) 3 hours credit.
Application of principles of second language acquisition to promote language and academic development in Pre-K to fourth grade classrooms. Attention to the needs of English language learners during the first years of schooling. Up to 10 hours of directed field experience are required. (Credit cannot be earned for both ESL 3023 and ABL 3023.)
3033 Foundations of English as a Second Language
(3-0) 3 hours credit.
Introduction to the field of English as a second language, with a focus on program, policies, assessment and placement of English language learners.
3053 Literacy in a Second Language
(3-0) 3 hours credit.
A course on the relationship of reading and writing acquisition to second language development; the design and evaluation of appropriate materials for the teaching of literacy. Up to 10 hours of directed field experience are required. (Credit cannot be earned for both ESL 3053 and ABL 3053.)
3063 Second Language Acquisition in Early Adolescence
(3-0) 3 hours credit.
Principles of second language acquisition to promote language and academic development. Attention to the characteristics of English language learning in early adolescence. Up to 10 hours of directed field experience are required.
4003 Approaches to Second Language Teaching
(3-0) 3 hours credit. Prerequisite: Completion of all requirements for admission to the teacher certification program or permission of instructor.
Study of instructional strategies and materials for teaching English language learners from beginning to advanced levels of proficiency. Focus on planning, implementing, and assessing developmentally appropriate ESL instruction in the learner-centered classroom. A minimum of 10 hours of directed field experience is required.
4013 Principles of First and Second Language Acquisition
(3-0) 3 hours credit.
Study of first and second language acquisition. Application of this knowledge to promote student’s language development in English and to promote teachers’ abilities to assess language proficiencies.
