Postbaccalaureate Clinical Laboratory Sciences Certificate Option
The postbaccalaureate certificate option in Clinical Laboratory Sciences is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s degree in science from an accredited institution. The curriculum includes 63.5 semester credit hours of professional coursework. Prerequisite science requirements not completed as a part of the student’s bachelor’s degree may be taken as a part of the certificate curriculum. The certificate option course of study is 18–24 months long.
In addition, the program offers categorical certificates designed for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in science who are interested in a particular subdiscipline of the clinical laboratory. These certificates are available in Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Immunohematology, Hematology, and Cytogenetics.
Successful completion of the generalist or categorical certificates qualifies students to take the national certification examinations as generalists or categorical scientists.
The Cytogenetics categorical may also be completed as a UTHSCSA CLS baccalaureate degree. Students must complete 90 hours of prerequisite coursework to apply to UTHSCSA for this degree track. After completion of courses at UTHSCSA, the students will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences with a track in Cytogenetics. Students can complete requirements for this track in 11 months. Successful completion of the certificate or bachelor of science curriculum qualifies students to take the national certification examination in Cytogenetics. The Cytogenetics Program is accredited by NAACLS.
