With less than 48 hours to go before the start of the Texas Folklife Festival, Chris Davie was still working as night fell, putting final touches on what is sure to be one of the annual event’s coolest attractions. The 30th annual festival opens at 5 p.m. Thursday on the grounds of the Institute of Texan Cultures, at Bowie and Durango streets. It continues through Sunday. (San Antonio Express-News 6/6/01 1B)

When Cyndi Taylor Krier took her place on the University of Texas System Board of Regents on April 25, she came prepared to roll up her sleeves and get down to work. That’s because Krier and the other eight regents are faced with making tough decisions regarding the future of the entire UT system.

Humana Health Plans of Texas Inc. has secured a highly sought-after health maintenance organization (HMO) contract that should add thousands of new enrollees to its ranks in San Antonio and South Texas. Humana has been selected by the University of Texas Board of Regents as an HMO option for UT employees and their dependents in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Austin, Houston, and Galveston.

Exploding balloons and a robot dog named Fluffy gave about 1,000 San Antonio-area high school and middle school students a taste of science Friday, and many plan to come back next year for seconds. The young science enthusiasts were treated to an array of experiments and hands-on training at the main campus of the University of Texas at San Antonio during the 2001 Engineering and Science Extravaganza.

Former running great Ricardo Romo is still making the West Side proud-now as UTSA president. Although Dr. Ricardo Romo would never consider himself a legend, his accomplishments—both athletic and academic—are a source of great pride for many West Siders. He was greeted warmly by customers at Mando’s Barbershop, a place he has been coming to since he was a child.
