Coordinating Board approves 19th Ph.D. program

UTSA's 19th doctoral degree program recently was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The Ph.D. degree in anthropology will be implemented in spring 2007 and housed in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts. The addition of a Ph.D. in anthropology is consistent with the goals of UTSA to become a top-100 research university and will address the shortage of educated and qualified candidates for leadership positions in anthropology-applied areas such as cultural resource management, museums and state agencies.

Greetings from the President

Dear Friend,
The good news continues at UTSA! The university now has 19 doctoral degree programs following the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s approval of a Ph.D. in anthropology.

The program, which will begin in spring 2007 in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, will prepare leading professionals in the growing field of ecological anthropology.

Just around the corner, the Alumni Association’s Rising Star Gala is Aug. 19 at the Westin La Cantera Resort. It is always a festive evening, and a portion of the proceeds benefits the UTSA Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.

Fall classes begin Aug. 23, and we’re expecting a record enrollment of 28,000 students.

Our students may find the campus a little dusty as work continues on student-supported expansion projects at the Recreation and Wellness Center and the University Center on the 1604 Campus.

Finally, please mark your calendars for the annual UTSA President’s Scholarship and Awards Dinner on Oct. 17. Last year, the gala raised a record $1.9 million for UTSA scholarships and other academic programs. I hope to see you there.

Ricardo Romo
President,
The University of Texas at San Antonio
