UTeach Program

The UTeach Program at UTSA allows students to explore the possibility of a career in teaching mathematics or science in middle school or high school. At the present time and in the foreseeable future there is a critical shortage of qualified mathematics and science teachers.

New Classroom.  The UTE 1011 and UTE 1021 introductory classes taught by Dr. Judy Fowles and Mr. Paul Tisdel are being held in a new lab facility in the Main Building.  Dr. Belinda Flores, Department Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies within the College of Education and Human Development, facilitated the arrangements.  The use of the lab allows for the integration of mathematics and science as well as the appropriate use of technology.

Spring Recruitment.  Recruitment of students for the Fall semester of the 2006-2007 Academic Year will begin the second week of April.  Information tables are scheduled for Tuesday April 11th and Wednesday April 12th.  Tables will be set up in the University Center Building along with an outdoor setting by the Science Building.  Email invitations will be sent to students ahead of time.  So, if you have classmates or friends who would like more information about UTeach, invite them to stop by from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM either day, at either location.

Vernier Software Technology.  While working in San Antonio public schools Judy Fowles and Paul Tisdel developed an association with Vernier Software Technology.  As a result of that relationship, the owners of the company, Chris and Dave Vernier, have provided technology kits to be used by students in the UTeach classes.  The kits contain motion detectors, temperature probes, and force probes, that are used in the classroom demonstrations.

Noyce Scholarships.   The National Science Foundation awarded UTSA and the UTeach Program scholarships to support individuals pursuing a career in teaching mathematics or science.  If you or someone you know qualifies for this scholarship, be sure to apply.  For the 2006-2007 Academic Year there are 12 undergraduate awards and 4 post-baccalaureate stipends available.  Each scholarship or stipend is worth up to $10,000 per year, based on financial need.  For a complete listing of the qualifications, please visit the website, or contact Dr. Joe Lazor, Joseph.Lazor@UTSA.edu.  Half of the awards and stipends will be distributed April 21, with two other distributions on June 16 and August 14.  For more information visit the UTeach web page - Noyce.

Summer Employment.  UTSA Prep is seeking mathematics, engineering, physics, computer science, and technical writing instructors to provide 6th - 11th grade students academic instruction.  Experienced faculty members with teaching certificates are preferred, though qualified students are encouraged to apply.  Temporary full-time employment: June 8 - July 28.  Application deadline: April 7.  To apply call (2100 458-2060, or visit www.prep-usa.org.
