Designing Accessible Web Sites

The following tools were compiled to help web developers at the University of Texas at San Antonio create web sites that are government compliant, user friendly, and efficient.

Section 508 Compliance

  • Bobby - Online compliance checker.
  • APrompt - A free compliance checker.
  • Section 508: The Road to Accessiblity - Official Government Website.
  • Lynx Viewer - Simulator displays the page in text-only format. Reading the text out loud - from top to bottom, left to right - in a measured cadence with punctuation and line break pauses simulates the output of a voice browser. The Lynx Viewer generates an HTML page that indicates how much of the content of your page would be available to Lynx, which is a text-only browser. In addition to showing how useful a site would be for a visually-impaired person, it is also a good indicator for anyone with older technology.
  • Adobe PDF Documents - The latest release of Adobe Acrobat 5.0 supports accessibility.
  • Simply Web 2000 - This is a free screen reader. Please contact us if you have used this software.

  • Vischeck - Experience your site through various color blindness disorders.
