On occasion, students request help with problems for which a referral to a community agency or professional may be necessary. For example, some students may require psychiatric care (medical treatment) as a component of their treatment. Others may request help for a family member such as a child or sibling. Some students may be in need of long-term individual treatment (more than about 12 sessions) which is beyond the scope and mission of the UTSA Counseling Service office.
In such cases, Counseling Services staff will assist the student with identifying his or her needs and will provide sufficient information to make an informed decisions about what type of referral may be best.
Counseling Services also maintains a working relationship with the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio to provide psychiatric back-up and treatment to UTSA students who may be in need of such services and are actively participating in therapy with Counseling Services.
