Update on President's Initiative on Preventing Sexual Assault and Misconduct

Dear Roadrunners,

I am writing to provide a brief update on the President’s Initiative on Preventing Sexual Assault and Misconduct. The three task forces have made good progress since the initiative’s launch in February, with in-depth examinations of the various aspects of our policies, programming, trainings and data management. UTSA’s membership in the Culture of Respect Collective will inform our next steps.

This month we are recognizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and events continue throughout April.

We are proud of the efforts of student groups and organizations and departments that produced events and experiences around this critical issue for our entire campus community.  I encourage you to attend events and participate in a conference or training this month to increase your knowledge of this important issue.

Of special note, I’d like to highlight the work being done to raise awareness regarding consent as a healthy, normal, and necessary part of everyday interactions (see the visuals installed at the Downtown Campus earlier this week, pictured here). In the weeks to come, we will be clarifying and communicating about our campus processes for support and reporting, and in August we will roll out some new visual campaigns to keep these issues top-of-mind for our students as we welcome them to campus for Roadrunner Days and the beginning of the fall semester.

As this semester draws to a close, I want you to know that these efforts will continue in full force.

Our primary goal is a safe place for all Roadrunners to study, work and live. Resources are available for support, reporting, and UTSA offices are available to assist students. We have lots of work to do, and we will continue to keep these issues on the forefront. This is a complex topic involving difficult conversations, but I know the Roadrunner Nation is up to the task.
We appreciate your continued support.

Interim Dean of Students
